History

Chelsea House is a family-owned furniture and home decor company that has been creating beautiful, fashion-forward pieces in North Carolina since its founding in 1974. The brand has its roots in the vision and talents of Bill Cain, who demonstrated an innate ability to take traditional design styles and reinterpret them into modern classics from a very young age. Cain grew up immersed in the furniture industry, as his father Alvin Cain had established a small furniture manufacturing business in the years following World War II. The elder Cain started the company in their family garage, crafting simple wood furniture pieces to meet the surging post-war demand for home furnishings. As the business grew through the 1950s and 60s, Alvin moved operations to a small factory and began experimenting with more ornate, traditional designs inspired by 18th-century European styles.

It was here that the young Bill Cain spent many hours after school, watching the artisans at work and developing his eye for design. He possessed a unique flair for retaining the elegance and craftsmanship of classic furniture styles while giving the pieces a fresh, contemporary twist that appealed to modern sensibilities. In 1974, at just 24 years old, Bill convinced his father to allow him to launch a new brand under the company's umbrella - Chelsea House. The Chelsea House line initially focused on lighting, mirrors, and home accent decor pieces like sculptures and vases. Bill drew inspiration from nature and iconic interior design movements like Hollywood Regency to create a collection that straddled the line between vintage glamour and modern chic.
