However, although the Gothic is peculiar, one should not forget that this is also the style of decoration of spacious majestic cathedrals, which means stained glass windows, high ceilings and elongated windows that occupy almost the entire height of the wall. How to decorate your home in the Gothic style, but at the same time not end up in a black-black room? Let’s figure it out.

To begin with, one should understand what are the main attributes of the Gothic style in the design of the room. Of course, one of the first things that comes to mind is the high vaults of the churches. Obviously, this is not feasible in an apartment, but stylization comes as a solution. If you are building a house and want a gothic interior, start with high ceilings, you don’t have to go to extremes and line up spiers. Remember that colored glass will greatly affect the lighting of a room, so choose colors that are not too bright to suit the room. There are stylized vinyl stickers on glass that allow you to recreate that very atmosphere without spending fabulous money on custom-made stained glass windows. And they can also decorate the doors of a sideboard or sideboard, a panel above the doorway, and other translucent and light interior elements.

Despite the fact that the main colors of the Gothic style are quite dark, they can be advantageously combined with lighter shades like milky or ivory. The palette can be quite diverse: in addition to black, red, gray, shades of brown, blue, and even purple are used. Wood textures for the floor or masonry (natural or artificial) when decorating the walls look extremely harmonious in such an interior. Wallpaper can be selected textured, which in other designs would look unnecessarily bulky. Often there are wallpapers with patterns and monograms, gold or silver embossing. The main thing in this is to make sure that it does not turn out too kitschy and cheap due to the abundance of gilded details.

Large slabs without color accents or dark wood with a noticeable specific texture will look appropriate on the floor. In the decoration of the ceiling, beams, imitation of open rafters, painting, or stucco molding at the junction with the walls are used. Again, it is important to keep to the measure. Remember that an excessively dark ceiling will visually make the room much lower and will press, making being in the room uncomfortable.

Gothic furniture is often extreme. Simple and laconic forms, striving for minimalism, in rooms with complex finishes with a lot of details, or vice versa – graceful curves, tapering backs of chairs and armchairs, heavy wooden tables. It is important to strike a balance so that the design does not come out too cluttered with details.

Wood is one of the most popular and appropriate materials for such an interior. In a bedroom with a gothic design, heavy beds with massive wooden headboards or even a canopy look great. Bedside tables with elegant bronze fittings and a double wardrobe will perfectly complement the set.

Gothic looks extremely advantageous in the dining room. Chairs with high backs, a decorated sideboard, heavy benches will perfectly fit there. It is better to choose a table made of wood or with a top made of marble or other natural stone. Gothic furniture is often decorated with carvings and monograms. It is better to choose copper or bronze fittings and individual parts in order to preserve and enhance the feeling of mysterious antiquity.

The living room is a real space for imagination. At a minimum, an antique decorated fireplace will set the tone for the whole room. And for it you can choose a set of fireplace accessories, which are often real works of art in and of themselves. Leather armchairs of large shapes, tea tables on carved or forged legs, decorative chests with scuffs will look great together, and being in such a room will bring aesthetic pleasure. Large mirrors in heavy forged frames will not only fit perfectly into the interior but will also visually expand the room, balancing the feeling of heaviness that can create an abundance of massive furniture.

Decorating gothic interiors is a very exciting process, if only because of the specifics of materials and shapes. In few other designs, candelabra, chests, sideboards, and forged figurines, which have almost lost their popularity, will look so harmonious and bright. Give preference to items made of bronze, copper, and brass, which are heavy and complex. Frames for mirrors and paintings with an abundance of details and carved compositions will look good. Even empty frames of intricate design on the walls will add an exquisite mystery to the room. Since Gothic is considered a high style, the abundance of paintings and stylized photographs will only embellish it.

Candelabra and weighty candlesticks are worth mentioning separately. In a modern interior, they often look too pretentious and even ridiculous, but they fit perfectly into the Gothic style. Most importantly, they complement it. Long candles, ordinary or tinted, do not even need to be lit, they will be pleasing to the eye anyway.

Light is an important element of the Gothic design, and therefore it should be given special attention. And it’s not just about the windows – the same candles and fireplace will create an almost authentic Victorian atmosphere with their lights. Wall lamps with forging elements and pendant chandeliers come in handy. Play with reflections and highlights to complicate the design: a mirror in front of the fireplace will give the room a flickering light, and by placing a candlestick next to the mirror, you can watch a whole dance of lights in the evenings.

Heavy fabrics and draperies are another great way to complement a Gothic space. It can be not only curtains on the window. Use fabrics to separate rooms or areas. It is better to give preference to deep colors. Of the materials, velvet or brocade is preferred. The peculiarity of this design is that even some of its elements will not be disturbed by your own decorations: use heavy wooden or forged cornices, large hooks with heavy tassels, or fringes for curtains.

The Gothic style is one of the most sophisticated, but it can be difficult to implement it without overdoing it. Try to avoid an unnecessarily heavy and oppressive atmosphere so that being in the room does not bring discomfort. Experiment with lighting and palette, avoiding overly bright colors, picking little things like tablecloths or table napkins – and you will be able to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the Gothic Victorian era, bulky and “sharp” at first glance, but full of detail and carefully chosen accents when viewed. The main thing is to know when to stop.
