Preparing a child for school is an important stage in the life of every parent. Health should always be in the foreground. That is why the process of choosing a desk and chair must be treated with maximum responsibility. It is necessary to take into account the factor that each child is individual, someone grows faster, someone slower.

What to look for when choosing a school desk and chair for a student

For children, a study desk and chair is a place at which they spend a lot of time.

The most common problem is that parents buy desks and chairs to grow. And it is highly discouraged to do this. In order not to make a mistake, it is worth considering the factors that we will discuss in this article.

How to choose a school desk?

When buying a school desk, it is very important to ensure maximum comfort for the child. It is worth choosing a desk in which the tabletop will be at the level of the solar plexus. The elbows should be completely flat on the table surface. Shoulders should be parallel to the table. The distance from the working surface to the eyes should be 12-20 in. This will ensure the most correct body position. It is also important to consider that there is a place to store school supplies. Before you buy a school desk for a student, familiarize yourself with some rules.

What should be the height of the desk?

This indicator is one of the most important. A tabletop that is too high or too low will surely ruin the child’s posture. Therefore, this factor must be taken into account when buying a school desk. The height of the tabletop should be appropriate for the height of the child. For example, for a height of 44-48 in., a table height of 22 is suitable. For children with a height of 48 to 52 in., the recommended table height is 23 in. If the child’s height is in the range of 52 to 56, then the table height should be 25 in. From 56 to 60 in, select a table with a height of 27 in. And for those whose height is above 60 in, it is worth starting from the indicators of a height of 28+ in. Make sure that the child’s knees do not rest on the tabletop, then the position of the body will be as correct as possible. It is best to try out the furniture before buying. Let your child sit for a few minutes and determine how comfortable they are.

What should be the size of the countertop?

The size of the countertop is also an important factor to consider when purchasing. It is important that there is space on the table for textbooks and other school supplies. The most optimal solution would be a width of 48 in. and a depth of at least 25 in. Thus, you will create the most comfortable conditions for the child.

What material to choose a table from?

All furniture intended for children must be environmentally friendly. Desks made of wood ideally meet this requirement. But they are quite expensive. A budget alternative to wooden desks are desks made of chipboard and MDF. For children’s rooms, only those pieces of furniture are suitable that are made of chipboard of class E1. Since it is they who emit the least amount of harmful substances. Furniture made of MDF is more environmentally friendly, but also slightly higher in price. It is also worth preferring those models of desks that have a laminated surface.

Secondary criteria

It is worth giving preference to desks that have rounded corners. This will reduce the risk of injury to furniture. The presence of additional boxes and compartments will not be superfluous. The child will be able to store school supplies in them. When choosing a desk, give preference to those models that have a recess on the surface for the handle and the presence of side hooks for a briefcase.

How to choose a chair?

By choosing the right chair, you will be able to ensure a comfortable and correct sitting for your child. Before deciding on a choice, you should familiarize yourself with their varieties and differences. Based on this knowledge, you will be able to choose the most optimal option. Any chair intended for a student must meet the following requirements.

What are the requirements for the backrest?

First, a backrest is required. Secondly, it must be orthopedic and follow the curves of the spine. Give preference to those chair models in which it is possible to adjust the height and depth. Thus, you will be able to fix the correct body position. Make sure that the student’s feet are firmly on the floor or on a stand, and the knees are bent at right angles. Thus, the child’s torso must also form a right angle.

How high should the chair be?

An important factor when choosing a chair is its height. The height of the seat must be selected according to the height. For kids whose height is between 44 and 48 in, a chair height of 13 in. is suitable. For children from 48 to 52 in. height – 14 in. If the child’s height is equal to the range from 52 to 56, then you should choose 15 in. seats. Between 56 to 60 in., chairs with a height of 16 in. are suitable. For children and teens whose height is above 60 in., it is worth starting from the height indicators of 17 in.

Secondary criteria

Also, when choosing a chair, pay attention to the armrests and castors. For example, it is not recommended for primary schoolchildren to choose models with armrests. Orthopedists explain this by the fact that when sitting, the child will lean on one or the other side. Thus, the deflection of the spine will not be formed correctly. As for the casters, it is worth giving preference to those models in which the casters can be fixed. Thanks to this, the child will not roll around the room, which means he will not be distracted from his studies. There are two types of wheel locking: automatic and mechanical. Automatic locking is triggered when the weight of the child exceeds 30 kg, and mechanical fixation is performed directly by the parents.

Types of chairs

When choosing a chair, you should also consider its appearance. Each of them has both advantages and disadvantages. In total, there are three types of chairs: classic, computer, and orthopedic. The classic chair is the most common one, it has a high level of strength and stability. It is popular for its low cost. This type has no additional functions, as a result of which it is inconvenient to sit on it for a long time. Computer chairs, unlike the previous ones, have such additional functions as the ability to adjust height and depth. They provide good support for the spine and are highly mobile. The downside of computer chairs is that they do not always fit into the interior of a child’s room. In addition, in most cases, they are equipped with armrests that are not recommended for young children. The third type is orthopedic chairs, they are the leaders in maintaining good posture. They can be adjusted both in height and in tilt. Orthopedic chairs are characterized by the presence of a massive back, which creates the correct position of the spine. Orthopedic chairs can last more than 10 years as they can be adjusted to any child’s height. The disadvantage of this type of chair is its high cost.

Therefore, the choice of a school desk and chair for a student should be taken as responsibly as possible. Consider all of the above recommendations, and you will definitely make the right choice.
